Swami Vivekananda’s Call to the Nation

Dear Friends,

“One vision I can see clear as life before me that the ancient Mother has awakened once more, sitting on her throne- rejuvenated, more glorious than ever. Proclaim her to the entire world with the voice of peace and benediction” thus proclaimed a great man. When India was in the clutches of imperialism, plagued by poverty, destitution and diminishing self-confidence, he went a step ahead and proclaimed that a resurrected India would be the leader of the world ( Jagad Guru Bharat)! That great soul was Swami Vivekananda.

Swamiji embodied the spirit of India. When he returned home from his travels overseas he was asked what he thought of India; Swamiji replied, “I loved my Motherland dearly before I went to America and England. After my return every particle of dust of this land seems sacred to me.” After his lecture in Chicago the entire world was at his feet, but gazing at the skyscrapers that filled Chicago’s moonlit skies, he wrote to a disciple, “When will India be like this?” No wonder every revolutionary in the Independence movement drew great inspiration from Swami Vivekananda- he ignited the spark of a nations conscience!

He had visualized India’s pre-ordained destiny of taking on the mantle of the world’s leadership. This would not only be in the realm of spirituality but also in every other sphere be it economic, political or social. He called for capacity building in science and technology. Influenced by Swamiji’s words, pioneer industrialist Sir Jamshedji Tata spearheaded the formation Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore alongside his famous steel plant. Sir JC Bose drew inspiration from his thoughts and went on to give India its rightful place in the world of science. Today, our advances in science and technology have made the world stand up and listen to us but Swami Vivekananda had asserted the need for capacity building a century ago.

“Every nation has a message to deliver, a mission to fulfill, a destiny to reach. The mission of India has been to guide humanity.” At Kanyakumari Swamiji realized India’s purpose- its message of spirituality, its mission to teach human beings the science of life- a destiny of wearing the crown of world leader. He spent his entire life in spreading this message.

Swami Vivekananda called for the awakening of India if at all the welfare of human kind was to be achieved. “Shall India die? Then, from the world all spirituality will be extinct, all sweet-souled sympathy for religion will be extinct, all identity will be extinct; and in its place will reign the duality of lust and luxury as the male and female deities, with money as its priest, fraud, force and competition its ceremonies, and human soul as its sacrifice. Such a thing can never be” he opined.

In Swami Vivekananda’s world view, so engrained was the sprit or service and renunciation in our DNA that we will not awaken to serve Indians alone but will work for the betterment of the entire humankind. Seeing the various problems that plague the world today, one will understand the importance of what Swamiji‘s words. It is because India has been unable to occupy what rightfully belongs to her that the world is suffering from the menace of terrorism, degradation of the environment and a topsy-turvy economy.

A famous philosopher once said, “Who lives if India dies? Who dies if India lives?” With freedom came an opportunity to take India to the pedestal of world leadership Sri Aurobindo said and this is what we must do in the 21st century. We may excel individually in every field but till we, as a nation, demonstrate our collective strength we would be unable to serve mankind, which will go against our destiny. Take the example of a football match- the common aim is to score more goals than the opposite team but the role of each player is different. There is no point if the goalkeeper leaves his stipulated place and runs ahead. Just like that we must have our collective goal clear in sight; the role of each one of us plays in attaining that goal varies. When we play our part with dedication, the results will be for everyone to see.

Friends, I can say with great conviction that it is possible to achieve Swami Vivekananda’s vision of a glorious India! Gujarat is blessed as Swamiji spent maximum time here, when he embarked on his nationwide journey from July 1890 to May 1893. Swamiji’s blessings have played a big part in taking Gujarat to where it is today and I see no reason why our country cannot perform wonders with his blessings. In Gujarat we are celebrating 2012 as the ‘Year of Youth Power’ to commemorate Swami Vivekananda’s 150th birth year. Let us use this occasion to tirelessly work together and play our part in realizing Swami Vivekananda’s dreams. This is the best gift we can give to this proud son who consecrated our land!

પ્રિય મિત્રો,

દેશનાં એક મહાન સપૂતે લલકાર કર્યો, “એક બાબત હું સ્પષ્ટપણે જોઈ રહ્યો છું, આપણી પ્રાચીન ભારતમાતા ફરી જાગૃત થઈ રહી છે, તેનો જીર્ણોધ્ધાર થઈ ચૂક્યો છે, આ પહેલા ક્યારેય નહોતા તેવા મહિમા સાથે તે પોતાના સિંહાસન પર બિરાજમાન છે. શાંતિ અને આશિષનાં વચનો સાથે સમગ્ર વિશ્વ સમક્ષ તેનો જયઘોષ કરો.” ભારત દેશ ત્યારે સામ્રાજ્યવાદનાં પંજામાં સપડાયેલ હતો, દારુણ ગરીબીમાં નિરાધાર બનેલા ભારતનો આત્મવિશ્વાસ તળિયે બેઠો હતો, ત્યારે એ મહાન સપૂતે વિચલિત થયા વિના ઘોષણા કરી કે, ભારતની આ પ્રાચીન ભૂમિ નવચેતન પામીને દુનિયા આખીનું નેતૃત્વ કરશે, જગતગુરુ બનીને ઉભરી આવશે. આ સિંહગર્જના કરનાર મહાત્મા હતા - સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદ.

સ્વામીજીએ પોતાનાં વ્યક્તિત્વમાં ભારતનો આત્મા વણી લીધો હતો. જ્યારે તે પોતાનાં વિદેશભ્રમણથી પરત ફર્યા ત્યારે તેમને પૂછવામાં આવ્યું કે તેઓ ભારત વિશે શું વિચારે છે, તો તેમનો જવાબ હતો, “હું અમેરિકા અને ઈંગ્લેન્ડ ગયો એ પહેલા મારી માતૃભુમિને ચાહતો હતો. હવે પરત ફર્યા બાદ આ ભુમિની ધૂળનો પ્રત્યેક કણ મને પવિત્ર લાગી રહ્યો છે.” શિકાગોનાં વ્યાખ્યાન બાદ સમગ્ર દુનિયા તેમનાં ચરણે પડી હતી, પણ શિકાગોની ચંદ્રકિરણોને ઢાંકતી ગગનચૂંબી ઈમારતોને જોઈને સ્વામીજીએ એક શિષ્યને લખ્યું, “ભારત આવું ક્યારે બનશે?” ભારતની સ્વતંત્રતા ચળવળમાં જોડાયેલા પ્રત્યેક ક્રાંતિકારી માટે સ્વામીજીની વાણી જબરદસ્ત પ્રેરણાસ્ત્રોત બની હતી. સ્વામીજીએ આ રાષ્ટ્રનાં અંતરાત્માને ઢંઢોળી દીધો હતો.

તેમણે ભારતનાં જગતગુરુ બનવાનાં પૂર્વનિર્ધારિત પ્રારબ્ધની પરિકલ્પના કરી હતી. ભારત સમગ્ર વિશ્વમાં અગ્રણી બને તેવી સ્વામીજીની આ પરિકલ્પના માત્ર આધ્યાત્મિક જગત પૂરતી સિમિત નહોતી પણ આર્થિક, રાજકીય અને સામાજીક એમ તમામ પાસાઓને આવરી લેતી હતી. વિજ્ઞાન અને ટેક્નોલોજીનાં ક્ષેત્રોમાં કૌશલ્યનિર્માણ કરવાનું તેમણે આહવાન કર્યું. અગ્રણી ઉદ્યોગપતિ સર જમશેદજી ટાટાએ સ્વામીજીનાં શબ્દોથી પ્રભાવિત થઈને પોતાના પ્રખ્યાત સ્ટીલ પ્લાન્ટની સાથે સાથે બેંગલોરમાં ઈન્ડિયન ઈન્સ્ટીટ્યુટ ઓફ સાયન્સની સ્થાપનાની આગેવાની લીધી. સર જે.સી.બોઝે તેમના શબ્દોમાંથી પ્રેરણા મેળવી વિજ્ઞાનનાં ક્ષેત્રે ભારતને ગૌરવવંતુ સ્થાન અપાવ્યું. આજે વિજ્ઞાન અને ટેક્નોલોજી ક્ષેત્રે ભારતે દુનિયા આખીનું ધ્યાન ખેંચ્યું છે પણ સ્વામીજીએ આ ક્ષેત્રે કૌશલ્યનિર્માણની જરૂરિયાતનો આગ્રહ એક સદી પહેલા જતાવ્યો હતો.

“દરેક દેશ પાસે દુનિયાને આપવાલાયક કાંઈક સંદેશ હોય છે, એક મિશન હોય છે જે તેણે પૂર્ણ કરવાનું હોય છે, એક લક્ષ્ય હોય છે જે તેણે સિધ્ધ કરવાનું હોય છે. ભારતનું મિશન માનવજાતને રાહ બતાવવાનું છે.” કન્યાકુમારીમાં સ્વામીજીને ભારતનાં ઉદ્દેશ્યનો સાક્ષાત્કાર થયો. આધ્યાત્મિક સંદેશનાં વાહક તરીકેની ભારતની ભૂમિકાની, માનવજાતને જીવનવિજ્ઞાન શીખવવાનાં ભારતનાં મિશનની અને વિશ્વનેતાનો તાજ પહેરવાની ભારતની નિયતીની તેમને પ્રતિતી થઈ. આ સંદેશ ફેલાવવા માટે તેમણે પોતાનું જીવન ખર્ચી નાખ્યું.

માનવજાતનાં કલ્યાણ માટે ભારતને જાગૃત બનવાનું આહવાન સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદે કર્યું. ભારતનાં અસ્તિત્વ અંગે પોતાનો મત વ્યક્ત કરતાં તેમણે કહ્યું, “શું ભારતવર્ષનું અસ્તિત્વ નાબુદ થઈ જશે? જો આમ થશે તો દુનિયામાંથી આધ્યાત્મિકતાનો નાશ થઈ જશે; ધર્મ માટેની સમધુર મમતા દેખાતી બંધ થઈ જશે, તમામ ઓળખ અળગી થઈ જશે; અને તેને બદલે વિષયવાસના તથા મોજશોખનાં દ્વૈતભાવ દેવદેવી બનીને સામ્રાજ્ય જમાવશે, પૈસો પૂજારી બનશે, કપટ, બળજબરી અને ચડસાચડસી લોકોની પૂજાવિધિ બનશે અને માનવ આત્માની બલિ ચઢાવવામાં આવશે. આવું ક્યારેય બની શકે નહિ”

સેવા અને ત્યાગની ભાવના આપણી રજેરજમાં એવી સ્થાપિત થઈ જવી જોઈએ કે આપણે માત્ર ભારતીયોની જાગૃતિ માટે નહિ પણ સમગ્ર માનવજાતનાં ઉધ્ધાર માટે કાર્ય કરીએ. અનેકવિધ સંકટોથી આજે વિશ્વ જે રીતે રુગ્ણ થઈને બેઠું છે તે જોતા સ્વામીજીનાં શબ્દોનું મહત્વ ખ્યાલ આવે એમ છે. ભારત જેનું હકદાર છે તેવા સ્થાન પર આજે બેઠું નથી અને એ જ કારણ છે કે દુનિયા આજે ત્રાસવાદ, પર્યાવરણનાં નાશ અને ડામાડોળ અર્થતંત્ર જેવા સંકટોથી ગ્રસ્ત છે.

એક જાણિતા ફિલોસોફરે કહ્યું છે, “જો ભારતનો નાશ થશે તો કોણ બચશે? જો ભારત જીવશે તો કોનો નાશ થશે? શ્રી અરવિંદે કહ્યું હતું કે આઝાદી ભારત માટે વિશ્વગુરુનાં મંચ પર બિરાજમાન થવાનો અવસર લઈને આવી છે. અને ૨૧મી સદીમાં આપણે આ જ કરવાનું છે. આપણે વ્યક્તિગત રીતે ભલે ગમે તેટલી ઉંચાઈઓ હાંસલ કરીએ પણ જો આપણે એક રાષ્ટ્ર તરીકે આપણું સામુહિક સામર્થ્ય ઉજાગર ન કરી શકીએ તો માનવજાતની સેવાનું માધ્યમ નહિ બની શકીએ, અને એક રાષ્ટ્ર તરીકે ભારતની નિયતિ સિધ્ધ નહિ થઈ શકે. ફુટબોલની રમતનું ઉદાહરણ લો. ટીમનું સામુહિક લક્ષ્ય એ હોય છે કે સામેની ટીમ કરતાં શક્ય એટલાં વધુ ગોલ કરવામાં આવે, પણ વ્યક્તિગત રીતે દરેક ખેલાડીની ભુમિકા અલગ-અલગ હોય છે. જો ગોલ-કીપર પોતાનું સ્થાન છોડીને મેદાન પર ભાગવા માંડે તો તેનો કાંઈ મતલબ નથી. એ જ રીતે આપણું સામુહિક ધ્યેય સ્પષ્ટ હોવું જોઈએ. ધ્યેયસિધ્ધિ માટે આપણા દરેકની ભુમિકા અલગ-અલગ રહેશે. જો આપણે આપણાં ભાગે આવેલી ભુમિકા પૂરી નિષ્ઠાથી ભજવીશું તો પરિણામ આપણા દરેકની સામે હશે.

મિત્રો, હું પૂરી ખાત્રી સાથે કહી શકું છું કે એક ભવ્ય ભારતનાં નિર્માણની સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદની પરિકલ્પના સાકાર કરવી શક્ય છે. સ્વામીજી જુલાઈ ૧૮૯૦ થી મે ૧૮૯૩ સુધી ભારતભ્રમણ પર હતા ત્યારે તેમણે ગુજરાતમાં મહત્તમ સમય વિતાવ્યો હતો અને એટલે જ ગુજરાત પર તેમનાં આશિષ છે. ગુજરાત આજે જ્યાં છે તે સ્થાન પર પહોંચવામાં સ્વામીજીનાં આશિષનો મોટો ફાળો છે. અને તેમનાં આશિષથી આપણો દેશ પણ ભવ્ય સિધ્ધીઓ હાંસલ કરી શકે એમાં કોઈ શંકા નથી. ૨૦૧૨ માં સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદની ૧૫૦ મી જન્મજ્યંતિની ઉજવણી ગુજરાત ‘યુવાશક્તિ વર્ષ’ તરીકે કરશે. ચાલો, આ અવસરે આપણે સૌ એકજૂથ બનીને સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદનાં સ્વપનાઓને સાકાર કરવા અથાક પરિશ્રમ કરીએ. આપણી ભુમિને પાવન કરનાર એ ગૌરવશાળી સપૂતને આપવા માટે આનાથી વધુ સુંદર ભેટ બીજી કઈ હોય?

I completely agree with your thoughts presented in your wonderful blog as always.
There have been always similarities between you and Swamiji and I see that there has been always been found that apart from being inspired by his works and thought process and life and character. This is no simple thing. A great soul like him left us too early. But the divine land of India could not wait more and so may be this land blessed us like a real hero like you. I was unfortunate not being there in the era of Swamiji but I ma not less blessed because I took birth in the Modi time. That great saint preached education and character building and took the whole youth on the path of freedom, not only from clutches of british but from darkness of ignorance. That itself made the youth awaken from their long sleep.
You have done the same with the youth of our generation. Today technology is power in our hands and thus you ve very carefully used this weapon to conquer the time.
I really salute the two heroes of different eras.

Your fans have always found similarities in you and great Swamiji. The primary similarity is the name itself. NARENDRA. Surely it’s not a co incidence and not a miracle. Your thoughts are similar to him; your life has been exceptionally like him. You chose to leave the house at a tender age and till now you chose to be a bachelor and are serving our nation with utmost dedication. We still have Swamiji between us and I guess somewhere a part of his soul lies in you.

When we look in the times when Swamiji was busy motivating the youth of India to fight for freedom and for self realization, the INC and other great leaders like M.K. Gandhi and others were not at all in the scene. He was such a blessed soul who not only thought of liberalizing the nation but leading India to the world map the.
As you mentioned he freed India from handcuffs of imperialism, plagued by poverty, destitution and diminishing self-confidence, he took a step ahead and thought of leading us on a international level.

Thanks Sir. At least you remembered the youth day. When government can spend millions on the birthday of some other leaders as a tribute, why it can't do the same for Swami ji. I am very proud to say that my life is totally influenced by Bhagat Singh and Swami ji.

Undoubtedly the celebrations going on in your state are prestigious, out of the box, and most importantly a great affair to watch. Like all the sadbhavana fasts, this event would be a gala affair and will catch many eyeballs I suppose. The whole of India is celebrating his birthday in its own way but I believe yours will be the best and respectable.

Very heartening to hear the call of spiritual nationalism. Seeing the world around strengthens the conviction that India is uniquely positioned and how its inclusive progress is indeed humanity's progress. Economists and strategists of our time mean everyone's growth by the term inclusive growth. But I feel it should *also* mean growth of good feelings, brotherhood, humanity alongwith increasing prosperity. Only then we'll stay true to our glorious heritage and would have done justice to that.

I appreciate your tribute to the Spiritual Genius of our Country called Swami Vivekanand on his 149th birth anniversary. A Man who taught us to be fearless and show the world what India is spiritually and ethically.
Just one sentence of him is enough to spark the hidden potential of youth that is " Arise, Awake and stop not till the goal is reached". He also taught us to face the change by saying "Each work has to pass through these stages - ridicule, opposition, and then acceptance. Those who think ahead of their time are sure to be misunderstood"

Gujarat is the only state where 150 birth anniversary of Swami ji is not just being celebrated but the whole year has been devoted to YOUTH to give true tribute to Swami Vivekanand! Vivekananda epitomises the true Indian culture and ethos. It's sad that he has been portrayed and marginalised by the ruling political masters who have in a similar way tried to undermine the contribution of Sardar Vallab Bhai Patel. It's sad that the Government did not find it fit to organise a good official function in the name of the Swamiji. Little wonder, none in the Government cared to remember another great humanist--Lal Bahadur Shastri--whose death anniversary fell on January 11. We have been brainwashed to remember only those who were on the right side of the ruling party. Sad, really sad. Even Vivekananda is not spared in this mindless remembrance of our icons.

નમસ્કાર, જ્યારે પણ રાષ્ટ્રભક્તોની વાતા આવે ત્યારે સ્વામિ વિવેકનંદનો શા માટે ઉલ્લેખ નથી થતો, કહેવડાવતા ધર્મ નિરપેક્ષ લોકો સ્વામિજીનો ઉલ્લેખ જાણી જોઇને ટળે છે તેવુ સ્પસ્ટ દેખાય છે પરંતુ સ્વામિજી ભારતનું એક એવુ અવિભાજ્ય અંગછે કે કોઇ જાણી જોઇને પણ અલગ કરી શકશે નહિં કેમકે સ્વામિજી દરેક ભારતીયના હદયમાં એક આગવું સ્થાન ધરાવે છે.

Its a great idea...N v shud try as many as more people will come to know the great views n thoughts of Swami Vivekanand.In fact the conetent of the school education shud be modified n there shud be flavored with the great thoughts of Swamiji n Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in detail.....:)

એમના જન્મદિવસ નિમિત્તે એમના કેટલાક વાક્યો ને યાદ કરીએ !

૧) મને ૧૦૦ નચિકેતા આપો અને હું દુનિયાને બદલી નાંખીશ !

૨) પશ્ચિમી સંસ્કૃતિનું આંધળું અનુકરણ કરનારાઓને કહીદો કે, "પશ્ચિમમાં જઈને તો સૂરજ પણ આથમી જાય છે"

૩) જો તમને તમારા ૩૩ કરોડ દેવી-દેવતામાં વિશ્વાસ હશે પણ પોતાની જાતમાં વિશ્વાસ નહીં હોય તો તમારી સફળતાનો કોઈ જ રસ્તો નથી !

૪) ઊઠો, જાગો અને ધ્યેય પ્રાપ્તિ સુધી મંડ્યા રહો !

All  these  things  to give speech to simple Indian  citizen  and   to  impress  others  about  our orator ship
What   requires   are   that  all leaders of India  must follow the  swami Vivekananda
We used  to export  all   the best things  and  import   worst  things

We have exported ;
-        Mahatma   Gandhi
-  value  & virtues  of   swami   Vivekananda
-  Maharshi     Arvind
-  our  GITA
-  great epic  RAMAYANA
-   Mahabharata
Resulting  the  some body else  digest  all virtues  , values  and contains of  all above and  we are doing  False  show

We   believe  our  prestige  in;
                        -to discuss  about Indian  poverty
                        -  income-tax  raid
                         -frauds
                          -political debate
                          -extra-income
                         - wealth  dumping
                          -  caste
                           -religion
                         -infringe laws and critisized
                         - To corrupt  officers and   get    work done
swami  loved  India  end of his  life  he never thought  that  my next generation  will make   the  India
crying  for,
             mal nutrition,  lack of  virtues, poverty, imbalance  in  economy, lack of infrastructures and  in  line of  corrupt  countries

I am completely agree with this article of modi sir for our greatest revolutionary SWAMI VIVEKANADJI. The goal of SWAMIJI was very clear and his ideas of awareness about INDIA was marvellous . And modiji also going in the same path as SWAMIJI told to our country , and i am sure not only modiji but all GUJARATIS will follow the SWAMIJI path .

And i reaaly appreciate to modi sir because by following SWAMIJI path , then the ROAD TO P.M. for modi sir is not to far ....

મોદીજી,
સ્વામીજી વિષે કેટલીક પુસ્તકો વાંચ્યા બાદ એવુ લાગતુ રહેતુ કે ગુજરાતે ભારતને ગાંધીજી અને વલ્લભ ભાઇ જેવા શાંત અને મુત્સદી નેતાઓ આપ્યા છે તો બંગાળે ભારતને સુભાષચંદ્ર બોસ અને રવિન્દ્રનાથ જેવા સ્વપ્નદષ્ટા અને જોષિલા આગેવાનો આપ્યા છે.
બંગાળ બસ એક "નરેન્દ્રનાથ"થી આગળ છે તમારા આવી જવાથી એ સરસાઇ પણ પૂરી થઇ જશે એવું લાગી રહ્યું છે...
